Main Street Sterling launched its annual membership drive this week, and will host a special membership drive cookout at Sterling Lake on Wednesday, May 7th for members and any businesses or individuals interested in memberships.

The Main Street Sterling Board of Directors will be serving hamburgers beginning at 5:15pm at the northwest corner of Sterling Lake where the Sterling High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble will also perform.

Membership levels are Bronze, for individuals, nonprofit organizations and clubs, from $25 to $75; Silver, for individuals and small businesses for $76-$225; Gold, for mid-sized businesses, from $226-$375 and Sterling Silver for large business, corporations and utilities investing $376 and more.

Main Street Sterling is funded by membership dues from local businesses, professionals, property owners, financial institutions, industry, concerned citizens and the City of Sterling.

Main Street Sterling helped attract more than $300,000 in public and private reinvestment into downtown Sterling that helped create more than 10 new full-time jobs.

A total of $28,000 in Incentives Without Walls grant funding was received from Kansas Main Street in 2007, and another $15,000 has already been secured for 2008.

The Sterling Services Call Center and Broadway Market opened last year with the assistance of Main Street Sterling and IWW funds.

The Main Street Approach is designed to revitalize the downtown area as a viable marketplace and the center of community activity. Main Street Sterling was designated a Kansas Main Street community in 1997 and is part of the National Trust Main Street Center, a program developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
